Providing exceptional patient care and achieving optimal outcomes is the global goal of perioperative nursing, a goal that requires nurses to be empowered as individuals, and collectively. This power is strengthened by global collaboration, sharing common challenges and innovative solutions to address these challenges.

The past year has made us aware of the important role perioperative nurses assume in rapid, coordinated response to mass casualty events. Lessons learned from terrorist attacks will be presented by experts from Belgium and France. The knowledge shared serves as a valuable resource for emergency preparedness and post event consequences around the world.

Clinical issues also pose a global challenge. Perioperative nurses are charged with preventing pressure injuries and surgical site infections. Yet, how to accomplish this for different patients, undergoing different surgical procedures and unique positioning is a challenge. Panels of international colleagues will share their innovative strategies for prevention of pressure injuries and surgical site infections, progress to date, and next steps.

Working in the operating room and continuously providing high quality patient care can deplete the energy of perioperative personnel, preventing them from doing their best work. To maintain this energy requires a balanced approach and taking care of oneself. An innovative approach used in France, focusing on quality of life in the operating room will be showcased.

The AORN Global Summit brings together a group of international perioperative experts (France, Belgium, Australia, Brazil, and China) to discuss challenges faced in 2017 and share solutions designed to meet these challenges. Roundtable discussions provides an opportunity to network and discuss specific issues identified by attendees.

So join us and take this opportunity to learn solutions to our common challenges from colleagues from around the world who share our passion for empowering nurses to provide exceptional patient care.
